Northallerton Male Voice Choir

Andrea Rhodes

Musical Director

I have always had a keen interest in music ever since I started playing the piano at the age of 5.
I was in a church choir as a teenager and I played lead roles in musicals at school as well as playing violin in various orchestras. My degree was in Creative Arts, main subject music, at Newcastle Polytechnic followed by a PGCE (teaching) qualification at Bretton Hall College in West Yorkshire. I taught music in 2 secondary schools in Doncaster and Wakefield for five and a half years before having my first son, Matthew.
I was a member of the Huddersfield Choral Society in the 1990’s for a few years and I subsequently joined the North Yorkshire Chorus after moving to Northallerton at the end of 1997. I am a member of Northallerton Musical Theatre Company and as well as singing and acting on stage, I have been the Musical Director for a few of their Christmas shows and also for their Spring Show ‘Songs from Stage and Screen’ in 2013. I have been a soloist for Northallerton Male Voice Choir on a few occasions as well as playing the piano for them now and again! I have filled in as pianist for the North Yorkshire Chorus, Northallerton Variety Company and have played for shows for Northallerton Musical Theatre Company, Richmond Operatic Society and Darlington Arts Academy.
I work for the County Music Service as a Peripatetic music teacher. This involves me teaching keyboard, piano and singing to children in 18 different schools in the Northallerton, Bedale and Easingwold areas. I started a choir at Northallerton College in 2008 and we have performed at many school concerts as well as at the Forum on a few occasions. As part of my work, I am involved in the North Yorkshire County Youth Choir which draws young people from all over North Yorkshire. Cathy Roberts, who is the arts advisor for North Yorkshire, started the choir 4 years ago and we have recently been on a 4 day residential course at Giggleswick School with a concert at the end where I played the piano and conducted one of the songs. I also teach piano and voice privately and I have a mixture of pupils from age 5 to adults.
I am delighted to be the new Musical Director of Northallerton Male Voice Choir. I am looking forward to new challenges and to working on new music with the choir and so far, I have really enjoyed the rehearsals. Let’s hope that we can encourage new members to join and hopefully build on the success of the choir for the future!
